How To Become The Go-To In Positioning For Ecommerce And DTC Brands

Positioning as the go-to illustration for ecommerce & dtc brands, a Pixel Samy Studio blog cover graphic

Let me start with something I see almost every week, because I run a few companies myself and I keep meeting ecommerce founders who have a genuinely good product, good margins, a clean website, fast shipping, and they still feel invisible, and when I ask them why a buyer should pick them over the three near-identical brands selling the same supplement or the same skincare or the same coffee, they pause, right, and that pause is the whole problem, because positioning for ecommerce and DTC brands is not about having the best product, it is about being the brand the buyer can actually describe to a friend in one sentence, and if you cannot finish that sentence for them, the market will not finish it for you either.

So here is the thing about this niche specifically. The barrier to launching a DTC brand has basically collapsed, right, anyone can spin up a Shopify store in a weekend, plug in a 3PL, run a few Meta ads, and look exactly like everyone else in the category, which means the buyer is now scrolling past forty brands that all say "premium", "clean", "science-backed", "sustainably sourced" and so on, and to that buyer you are noise, and noise does not get a premium price, noise gets compared on price and shipping speed until your margin is gone.

If the only thing that separates you from the next brand is your discount code, you do not have a brand, you have a temporary price.

Why positioning for ecommerce and DTC brands is really a memory problem

The catch here is that positioning for ecommerce and DTC brands is not won on your product page, it is won in the buyer's head weeks before they ever hit your product page, right, because the way people actually buy in this category is they see you somewhere first, they see the founder talk about why the formula has zero fillers, they see a teardown of why most competitors cut corners on testing, they see a behind-the-scenes of a batch getting rejected, and by the time they land on the site they already trust you, so the sale is almost a formality.

The brands that win this are the ones who own a specific position in the buyer's memory, and to be very honest the position has to be narrow to be sticky, for instance:

  • the brand that is obsessively transparent about sourcing, to the point of showing the actual farm and the actual lab results
  • the brand for one very specific person, like "creatine for women over 40" instead of "creatine for everyone"
  • the brand with a founder who is genuinely the most knowledgeable person in the category and shows it constantly
  • the brand with a point of view the category is afraid to say out loud, and so on

Does that make sense, right. You are not trying to be liked by everyone, you are trying to be the obvious choice for someone, because the obvious choice does not get price-compared.

The boring before-and-after that decides everything

Let me show you the difference I see between a brand with no position and a brand that owns one, because it is almost always the same story.

Signal No position Owns a position
Buyer can describe you "some skincare brand I saw" "the one that shows their lab tests"
Why they buy lowest price that day they trust the founder already
Repeat rate one-and-done comes back, tells friends
Ad cost climbing every month warm audience already exists
Margin shrinking protected by trust

The brand on the right did not get there by accident, and they did not get there by posting a product photo three times a week, they got there because they consistently put expertise and point of view in front of the buyer until the buyer could finish that one sentence themselves, and that is exactly the work most DTC brands never do because the founder is busy on operations, on fulfillment, on supplier calls, on the next launch and so on.

What I would actually build to win this

This is where I will be very honest about what I do, because almost 95% of the durable DTC brands I admire are built on founder distribution, not on more ad spend, and the reason is simple, ads rent attention and stop the second you stop paying, whereas content that builds your position compounds and behaves like an owned asset, so here is the content flywheel I would run for you.

  1. One focused recording session a month with you, the founder, and that is genuinely the only real ask on your calendar, one block, not a content schedule that eats your week.
  2. From that single block we pull 30+ platform-native assets, the short-form clips that do discovery, one flagship long-form piece that does the deep trust-building, the carousels that explain your sourcing or your point of view, and so on.
  3. We distribute everywhere it compounds, across Reels and Shorts and YouTube and wherever your specific buyer already spends time, posted on a real cadence so attention stacks week over week instead of resetting every Monday.
  4. The content does the trust-building and the positioning before any sales conversation, so the right buyer lands on your site already knowing exactly who you are, and the whole thing turns into a flywheel that spins on its own.

The reason this beats hiring a freelancer who posts randomly is that there is a system behind it, right, that is one part, and secondly we are packaging your expertise for the buyer's actual decision, not for vanity views, so it brings business and not just likes.

Where most of your competitors actually are

Here is the gap, and it is a real one. Most brands in your category are either basically invisible online beyond a few ad creatives, or they post one-off content with no system and no point of view behind it, so they never accumulate a position in anyone's memory, and that gap is exactly what we close for you, because when you are the only founder in the category consistently teaching, showing, and taking a stand, you stop competing on price and you start owning the category in the buyer's head.

Think about how Brian Mark or any operator who actually shows up built trust before the sale, that same mechanic works for a coffee brand or a supplement brand or a home goods brand, the buyer just needs to meet the person behind it enough times, right.

Start narrow, then let it compound

If you are starting from zero, do not try to be everything, pick the one position you can genuinely own, the one sentence you want the buyer to be able to say about you, and then point every recording session at making that sentence undeniable over the first 60 to 90 days, because positioning for ecommerce and DTC brands is not a tagline you write once, it is a position you earn by showing up consistently until the market agrees with you.

At the end of the day, here is what I would build for you, a single monthly session turned into a month of distribution that quietly makes you the obvious choice in your category, and if that is the kind of engine you want running while you stay on the actual business, come Book a Demo over at /boutique-agency/contact and I will show you exactly how it would look for your brand.

So yeah. That's my way of saying it.

The content flywheel we run for you
1One shoot a monthA single focused recording session is the only real ask on your calendar.
230+ assetsWe pull a month of platform-native pieces from that one block of time.
3Distribute everywherePosted on cadence across the platforms your buyer already lives on.
4Leads come warmed upThe content does the trust-building, so the right people arrive ready.
