What an Instagram Reels Agency Should Actually Do for You

Strategy

Instagram Reels have become one of the main ways businesses and personal brands reach new people on Instagram, and a whole industry of Reels agencies has grown up around them. Some are excellent. Many produce exactly the same kind of content, trending audio, quick cuts, text overlays and the latest format, whatever the client's business.

That content can collect views, but views are not the goal for most businesses. The goal is attention from the right people, which turns into followers, enquiries and customers. Reels that chase trends rarely do that, because they look like everyone else's.

Here is what a Reels agency should actually deliver, and how to tell whether one is building your business or just filling your grid.

What separates Reels that build a business from Reels that collect views?

Whether they say something only you could say.

A trend Reel, the same audio and format everyone is using that week, can get views because the format is popular. But it rarely makes viewers remember the business, because it is indistinguishable from thousands of others.

A Reel that shares genuine expertise, a clear opinion, a useful tip, a real story from the business, is harder to make but far more valuable. Viewers who find it useful remember who made it, follow for more and eventually become customers.

Trends borrow attention. Expertise earns it, and earned attention is the kind that turns into customers.

What should a Reels agency deliver?

Consistent, well edited Reels built from your real expertise.

That usually means clips cut from longer recordings, podcasts, interviews, talks, founder conversations, alongside Reels recorded specifically for Instagram. Each Reel should open strongly, stand alone, carry accurate captions and fit a consistent visual style that makes your content recognisable.

A good agency also provides a publishing rhythm and learns from performance, doing more of what works for your audience.

Both agencies can get views. Only one of them builds a business.

Why do the first seconds matter so much?

Because Reels viewers decide almost instantly whether to keep watching.

The first moment of a Reel has to earn attention. A slow introduction, a logo or a vague opening loses viewers before the valuable part arrives. Strong Reels open on the most interesting line, a surprising statement, a clear question or a striking visual.

A good editor understands this and often restructures a clip so the best moment comes first. I wrote more about that judgment in what actually makes the best short form video editing agency.

Where should Reels content come from?

Mostly from recordings you already make, supplemented by Reels recorded on purpose.

Recording a separate video for every Reel is exhausting and rarely sustainable. The more efficient approach is to record longer conversations or talks and cut many Reels from each. One good hour of conversation can produce fifteen to thirty standalone Reels.

Purpose recorded Reels still have a place, especially for timely content, behind the scenes moments and product demonstrations.

What about branded content and partnerships?

Disclose them clearly, as both the rules and your audience expect.

When Reels involve paid partnerships, gifted products or affiliate arrangements, the relationship generally needs disclosure. The US Federal Trade Commission's guidance on endorsements and influencers explains the principles, and Instagram provides tools for labelling paid partnerships.

A Reels agency working with partnership content should keep disclosures in place and never cut them out.

How many Reels should a business post?

Several a week, consistently, as long as each one is worth watching.

Instagram rewards consistency, and more quality Reels mean more chances to reach new people. But volume only helps if each Reel stands on its own. Padding a schedule with weak Reels teaches your audience to scroll past you.

Which businesses benefit most from a Reels agency?

Businesses whose customers spend time on Instagram, which is a wide range.

Local businesses, consumer brands, personal brands, coaches, creators and many service businesses all benefit. I have written about how Reels fit specific industries, including real estate agents and restaurants.

How much does a Reels agency cost?

It depends on volume.

A business posting a few Reels a week is usually best starting with a per video editor.

A business posting daily across Instagram and other short form platforms, or cutting many Reels from podcasts and long form content, needs more capacity. Ours starts at two thousand dollars a month for up to two hundred short form and thirty long form videos, thumbnails included, produced by close to fifty editors in-house in Dubai, with strategy engagements costing more.

I lay out how other services charge on the comparisons pages, with the numbers they publish themselves.

Should Reels be repurposed to other platforms?

Yes, with adjustments.

The same vertical clips can often work on TikTok and YouTube Shorts, which multiplies the value of each edit. Small adjustments to captions, length and opening for each platform usually improve performance.

What mistakes do businesses make with Reels?

Chasing trends that have nothing to do with the business.

Slow openings that lose viewers immediately.

Missing or inaccurate captions.

And inconsistent visual style, which makes the business harder to recognise.

How do you judge whether a Reels agency is working?

By followers and enquiries from the right people, not just views.

Views can come from anywhere. The real questions are whether the right audience is following, whether they engage meaningfully and whether Reels lead to enquiries, bookings or sales. A good agency tracks and reports on those outcomes, not just vanity numbers.

How long before Reels make a difference?

Often a few weeks for reach, and a few months for business results.

Individual Reels can perform quickly, but building a following of the right people and turning attention into customers takes consistent publishing over months.

Should businesses use trending audio at all?

Occasionally, when it genuinely fits, but never as the whole strategy.

Trending audio can give a Reel a small boost in reach, and it can be fun when it suits the content. The problem is when it becomes the default, because then every Reel is built around someone else's sound rather than the business's own message.

For most businesses, the strongest Reels feature a person speaking, the founder, an expert, a team member, with their own voice carrying the content. Trending audio works best as an occasional light touch, not a replacement for substance. Commercial accounts should also check which sounds they are licensed to use.

How should Reels look to be recognisable?

Consistent enough that a follower knows it is you before reading the name.

A recognisable look comes from repeated choices, the same caption style, colours, framing, fonts and editing rhythm across every Reel. Over time, followers start to recognise your content instantly in the feed, which increases the chance they stop to watch.

That consistency is much easier to achieve when the same editing team works on every Reel, following a simple style guide, rather than different editors improvising each time.

Do Reels work for local businesses?

Very well, because Reels can reach nearby people who have never heard of you.

Local businesses, clinics, restaurants, gyms, salons, trades, estate agents, can use Reels to show their people, their work and their expertise to their community. Content that answers local questions or shows familiar places often performs particularly well with nearby audiences.

The same principle applies as for any business. Real people and genuine expertise beat trend content, because local customers want to know who they will actually be dealing with.

How do Reels fit with Stories and regular posts?

Reels reach new people, Stories nurture existing followers, and posts hold your best content.

Reels are Instagram's main discovery format, reaching people who do not yet follow you. Stories keep existing followers engaged with lighter, more frequent updates. Grid posts and carousels provide depth and a permanent showcase.

A good content plan uses all three, with Reels doing most of the work of finding new audiences.

Should you hire a Reels agency or a creator?

It depends on whether you need your own voice or someone else's reach.

A creator brings their audience and their own style, which suits product promotion and awareness. A Reels agency produces content featuring your people and expertise on your own account, which builds your business's presence over time.

Many businesses use both, creators for occasional campaigns and an agency for ongoing content.

How should you brief a Reels agency?

With your audience, your expertise and examples you like.

A useful brief explains who you want to reach, what you know that they need, what your brand should feel like and a few Reels you admire, with notes on why. It also covers practical constraints, such as topics to avoid and any compliance requirements.

The better the brief, the faster the agency produces Reels that sound like you.

What should a monthly Reels report actually tell you?

Which topics and openings brought in the right followers, and what changes next month.

A useful report is short. It shows which Reels reached new people, which led to follows, saves, messages or enquiries, and what the agency will do differently as a result. It connects performance to decisions.

A report full of view counts and charts with no conclusions is a sign the agency is measuring activity rather than outcomes. Ask for the decisions, not just the data.

Where should you start?

With one long conversation about your expertise, cut into ten Reels that open strongly.

The short form video editing page explains how Reels are produced at volume, and the content flywheel page shows the full system. So yeah. That's my way of saying it.
